This short film and the accompanying images are a look into the moments in between being John John Florence. The stuff he's into besides surfing, wrapped up in a project that was a film photography challenge that is also a passion of his. It was an honor to pitch this idea, have him like it and invite us into his world to make it a reality.

Define Yourself is a content series designed to support Nixon’s TAKE ON THE WORLD campaign about multi-talented people who collectively embody the brand ethos that is Nixon. Shooting this series was a vehicle to also produce the raw assets needed for the year while being the soul and personality of the brand.

Working with beach volleyball's finest - Brandie Wilkerson on the women's side and the phenom duo of Miles Partain and Andy Benesh on the men's side was incredible. The concept started as a way to represent the sport in a very different light and to build equity in Blenders Eclipse frame name. PLAY LIGHTS OUT. is a campaign that takes place during an eclipse where these athletes and products shine bright.

We brought together surf innovators Herbie and Nathan Fletcher for a road trip down memory lane in a new short film entitled Peninsula South, where the father and son team head down to Baja and revisit some memories and make new ones. The film and photos capture Herbie’s pioneering spirit and the close-knit relationship he has built with his son Nathan as they set out on an expedition they’ve not made together in over twenty years, reignites both their love for Baja and their deep appreciation for one another. By the 60s, Herbie had already begun exploring Baja in search of un-crowded lineups and adventure. As his life moved forward, he built a family who share his love of travel, and who have joined him countless times to explore the southern peninsula. On this latest mission, Nathan discusses his father’s contagious, childlike enthusiasm for surfing and life, and shares how he hopes to pass those ideals down to the next Fletcher generation.

It was a fantastic honor to pitch, produce, art direct, tie this cultural piece back to a product collection, and finally roll out the creative with these guys. Some of the finished deliverables included an Art Show, a zine that accompanied Monster Children's 50th issue along with an ad in that issue, site takeovers, and a Vimeo Staff pick for the short film.

Keith Malloy has a beautiful home life but is also right at home traveling to the far reaches of the world in search of adventure. Getting to tell the Ranger watch story through his genuine lifestyle was nothing short of an honor for me. One of my favorite days of work in my entire life was spending the day on his family ranch, capturing snippets of real life through the masterful eyes of Chris Burkard and Aaron Regan. Horses were wrangled, fish were caught, stories were told, and Keith even scored the soundtrack for the video on the spot. Many thanks and respect to Keith and the Malloy family for the glimpse into their life and home.

Koa Rothman comes from a storied family tree and the epicenter of surfing. Having the honor to interpret his story and the spirit of his vlog, “This is Livin” for Blenders eyewear was right in my sweet spot. I knew right away that Koa’s charismatic spirit alongside his hardcore roots, set to the beauty and power of his home on the North Shore of Oahu would make for a short bio video with a lot of heart. The Blenders // This is Livin’ product launch was a huge success, selling out the first inventory of sunglasses in under 2 weeks.

Nixon's collections have a place in the brand's aesthetic that bridges the gap between product inspiration and the no limit attitude the brand exudes to the world. At Nixon there's a bar set within the brand where there's good, there's great, and then there's insane. Insane sometimes involves live snakes, fire, dangerous weapons and sometimes requires creating something that is just simply beautiful.

Launching the World's First Action Sports Smartwatch was an incredible creative task. From our initial press release featuring the creative I led getting 600 million impressions to the watch selling out within weeks in the largest CE retailer, it was an amazing 360° campaign that showed positive results.

A dream project completely left up to myself, master water unit cinematographer Daren Crawford, and the world's best bodysurfer, Mark Cunningham. This project meant even more considering Mark is my bodysurfing mentor and an artist I have a great respect for. The main goal for this video was it needed to look stunning and engage viewers on a 9 foot tall video display at our tradeshow booth in Switzerland and in the Nixon concept store in Paris. 

Brian Bielmann shot the still photo that we used on the side of the 2 story Baselworld Tradeshow booth and that is the thumbnail of this feature.

John John's prowess on the board is undeniable and hard to look past when talking about him or telling a story about him. What's great about how I get to tell stories through Nixon is that it isn't always the surface level, obvious things that make people like John John tick. Our product team worked very closely with him to make products that would work for his life as a photographer, sailer, world traveler, and surfer. A go-anywhere backpack with a dedicated camera compartment, the super thin Comp watch in a marbleized camo, and a microfiber towel rounded out his essentials.  

It was my pleasure to work with John John to show his dream of sailing around the world and taking a camera with him everywhere. He's such a humble, rad human being - it's hard to talk to him about surfing because you can tell he doesn't want to talk about himself. As soon as you ask him about his camera or sailing though, you can see him open up and tell you how "there's really no limit to what you can do". 

The Nixon John John Florence Capsule Collection was launched alongside his movie View From a Blue Moon with print ads, videos, digital ads, and marketing contests that created a ton of demand for these products. It's great to launch signature product for someone, but it's that much more special to get to tell it in a genuine way - with a bag on JJF's back that will go to great places and do amazing things. Not just a name on a product - a product that is used by that person.

Audemars Piguet is a luxury watch brand rooted in the foundation of “To break the rules, first you must master them.” Enter Tania Tare and her rule breaking brand of golf trick shots. This adventure started off as a concept to take Tania to three different ‘off golf course’ locations to do her unique brand of golf trick shots - the beach, the desert, and the city. The visual story of the city was so different than anything being done for Tania and for Audemars Piguet that we decided to go all-in with the city and concrete concept. The result is a visually compelling look into what’s possible when looking at your surroundings both as a backdrop and as a character in your craft.

How do I sum up the time I had at DC shoes in a blurb? It was a special time as the subculture of Action Sports came into the households of millions of people, with DC at the forefront. A true leader in the performance skate shoe category and with the creative and advertising as the driving force- I was fortunate to be mentored by Ken Block, one of the world’s best marketers, in the center of a special place at a special time. 

World records, unbelievable personalities, creative without boundaries, and a talented team that allowed me to learn, lead and to help build an incredibly successful brand along the way. 

Names like Danny Way, Rob Dyrdek, Andy Irons, Dane Reynolds, Travis Pastrana, Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath, Travis Rice, Dave Mirra, Travis Barker, Big Black, Shepard Fairey and Adam Sandler and countless others were a dream team to collaborate with. 

I started at DC as a green art school graduate who did a little bit of everything in the art department and within a year was tasked with designing an archival coffee table book for the brand with the Founder Ken Block. This provided the ultimate foundation to become the Advertising Manager and eventually the Global Art Director for the brand. 

The scroll of visuals to go with this post could go pretty deep: here are just a few. The DC Video poster, Rob Dyrdek apparel campaign and Fantasy Factory set design, Andy's congrats ad, Travis Barker’s Remix ad, Stevie's Scenario ad, AVE's Avenger shoe ad, The DC Coffee table book, the Mountain Lab DVD and packaging including sourcing art from the world's premiere Ski Resort Artist Jim Niehues. That last bit was just to emphasize that everything we did at DC was top notch, involving the world's best. 

Roles ranged from Concept, Campaign, Publication Design, Art Direction, Media Relations, Post Production, Layout & Advertising Department Management. Originally with the brand during a pivotal time from 2000-2006, I also rejoined the team in 2011 as the Global Art Director where I focused on Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory, Ken Block’s upcoming Gymkhana project and re-aligning creative with the heritage roots of the brand.

DO YOU BELIEVE? Coach “PRIME” Deion Sanders asked this question over and over to his fans and critics alike going into the 2023 season. Blenders eyewear believed and fast-tracked a partnership and unique signature product design to market in record speed. Deion is the ultimate marketer and our product launch date coincided perfectly with the rivalry between CU and CSU to create one of the largest viral snowballs in sports history. Too many highlights to include, and to be continued.

In 2018, luxury watchmaker, Audemars Piguet (AP), hired our Agency to build and launch a golf specific social channel.

The Agency worked to conceptualize and produce two digital series that brought to life AP’s brand pillars of mastery, artistry and extraordinary relationships.

For Manhattan Masters, we elevated the world of engaging golf content, literally. Set atop a sky scraper with Lower Manhattan as a backdrop, AP ambassadors sent glowing golf balls streaking through the night sky, to a floating target suspended by drones. The series grew social channels by 20% within the first 24 hours of the premier and earned organic PR pickups from Golf.com, Golfmagic.com and LuxuryDaily.com.

Special thanks to Jared Kennedy for the wild dream of using drones to suspend the target and to Kemp Curley for helping us realize this dream.

From the concept stages, JJF's knee injury, torrential downpour and floods, shooting 85 rolls of film, to bringing it all back together - this project was a challenge that was all worth it.

It's been said too many times but Andrew Reynolds is the Boss. Not because he's a commanding figure or someone to fear but just because he's earned the respect of those around him, without question. His skating alone speaks volumes but it's his humble demeanor, creativity, and caring personality that shows you why the bonds in his life are so strong. 

Presenting the visual narrative for his Nixon Signature Collection was a storytelling journey through his thought process when choosing what to make and why to make something with Nixon. Stemming from his favorite belt he bought in South America on a skate trip - the whole collection branched off of that item and the essentials he'd want to have with him on a trip. Wrapping the campaign with a color story of shades of black, bronzed leather, and hints of color, every touch point exuded Andrew and the product. It's all about the details, and in this one the details and textures all needed to connect without looking like you tried too hard. 

As icing on the cake, Fender Guitars created a custom guitar featuring the color story from Andrew's Collection as a gift.

Andrew's mantra for this project was "Today is a gift." This was something that I appreciated when being a part of this project on a professional level but also as something my dear grandmother would remind me of throughout her amazing life.

Team Designed, Custom Built has been a mantra of Nixon's since day one. The Nixon Blaster Bluetooth Speaker was a result of this process - a super durable, amazing sounding product, wrapped in a colorful skin. 

To debut this product, we photographed a huge cross section of the Nixon team being the opposite of careful with the speaker. Most speakers in this market were super fragile and breakable - not conducive to the life of a traveling action sports enthusiast. It was one part focus group, one part ad campaign. We had a lot of fun putting this connected 360 degree campaign together and outdid all projected numbers for this product right out of the gate.

Working with Surfing’s biggest YouTube star and his Stay Psyched brand, this collaboration with Blenders brought all the fun and high action from JOB’s world to this campaign. The campaign spanned across Blenders, Stay Psyched, Jamie O’Brien & Tina Cohen’s organic and paid social channels as well as video pre roll on YouTube. It was a custom campaign which I led by literally going into Jamie’s Jamie’s world on the sand at Pipeline. We sold a ton of shades!

The idea of The Weird experiment came about through the multiple talents of Nixon’s Curren Caples, being a professional skateboarder as well as great surfer, we tapped into the production of the vehicles that make his world go round. From there Nixon looked to progressive surfboard shaper Jason Bennett and skateboard technician Paul Schmitt to create something custom for Curren that would be outside of his typical go to boards. From there tapping into Nixon creative contributor Sage Vaughn to tap into some weird visuals making for a truly weird and wonderful collection of images.

The heart of skateboarding and surfing is experimentation—shapes, lines, and trying to come up with something original—something new—through your actions. The crossroads of all those things is a weird center of uncomfortable, awkward, fun, and different.

Brand Book, Slogan and Guidelines for etnies

The Ultratide was a unique project where I got to contribute as a surfer, creative, and consumer throughout the process. 

To tell the story in our hero video, I wanted the viewer to go on a journey from the bottom of the ocean, to the surface, then above, and back down again accompanied by animated typography that illustrated the data points featured by the watch. 

The stunning visuals in the video came as a result of precision surf forecasting during a narrow window where we needed medium sized surf, clear water, and hopefully no crowds. I made the call to send top water cinematographer Daren Crawford and pro surfer Conner Coffin to Teahupoo, Tahiti for a 2 day shoot that couldn't afford a miss. Surfline's forecast was right on and the stars aligned for the perfect scenario to have fun-sized Teahupoo to yourself - A dream for most surfers and for a creative wanting to let the ocean demonstrate to the viewer the features of the Ultratide through title design that mimics the user experience of the watch. It was only fitting that it took a reliable surf forecast to tell the story of a surf forecast watch.

The Ultratide watch story and creative was picked up by major publications like Wired magazine, GQ, and Vogue and has been a must have for people who live to be in the water.

Creating an opportunity, not just idly waiting, is how Stella Mozgawa, of the band Warpaint, made it happen. Playing drums since she was 13, one of Stella's pinnacle moments in her music career happened when a band she was in opened for Foo Fighters. After playing the opening set for the Foos, they gave her a shout out for her skills on the drums, in the middle of their show, and according to Stella, "It just blew my little mind!"

Living in the moment, in the now, Stella doesn't take her chosen profession for granted and in fact, she celebrates it: "The collaborative experience of playing music is such a present thing. I see it as a wonderful thing I get to do." -Stella Mozgawa

To support a product launch for Nixon and their new women’s watch, “The Clique”, we wanted a unique way for women to potentially see themselves in the campaign. Traditionally a “clique” is known as an exclusive group, so we looked to challenge that notion by making an inclusive campaign—one that celebrates friendship and uniqueness. This became the genesis for the campaign slogan, “Made for We.” The campaign went away from just featuring one person or a group that all looked and acted the same - each young woman had their own style and personality to show the versatility of Nixon's watches while delivering our message of unity.

Wasserman represents some of the top athletes in the world, including NBA all star Klay Thompson. Our creative agency within Wasserman, The Agency, has been fortunate to partner with Klay and many of his sponsors to provide creative solutions.

We’ve worked with Klay’s sponsors to make sure he is fulfilling his contracts while also pushing out photography and a personal brand he’s proud of.

As a means to solidify their influence and become the leading non-endemic namesake in golf, RBC hired The Agency to create a storytelling piece that would set them apart from other financial institutions participating in the golf industry featuring their newest ambassador, Dustin Johnson.

Results

This commercial has run during every PGA event that RBC has had an ad spend for over the past 16 months. Expanded Agency services in 2018 as a direct result of our authentic approach to golf and production efficiencies.

My role as a Creative Consultant turned into being the VP of Creative to help JUST LIVE officially launch in late 2020. A first in a sea of competitors, Just Live brings champion athletes from NBA, MLS, and action sports to voice their stance against opiods and painkillers to treat them in their journey to be their best. The roster of athletes includes Olympic Gold Medalists who look at every thing they put in their body to perform their best - It is a true honor to work with and help project their voice for a different path.

My third day at Nixon was on a plane to Hawaii to start capturing the many sides of our surf team for the Archive Campaign. Over the next year and a half I researched and planned each shoot, creating moodboards and shot lists for shoots from Kauai to the Wasatch Mountains to Brooklyn and art directed the design and nuances put into curating each final piece of creative. This campaign was a study in documenting the lives and hidden stories of the Nixon team and merging those with the stories behind the products we make. Winner of SIMA EU Campaign of the Year 2013.

A feel good aquatic storyboard to welcome two native Hawaiians turned Californians to the Nixon surf team. We used Nixon's headquarters hometown of Encinitas in North County San Diego as the backdrop to highlight Kelia Moniz' and Leila Hurst's effortless style and infectious good vibes.

Hailing from Oahu, Moniz grew up with four brothers and a father that encouraged her to spend more time in the water than on land. She began surfing at the age of five and has spent most of her years on a longboard, most recently capturing her second straight ASP World Longboard Title. 

Born and raised in Kauai, Hurst is also a Hawaii native. As fun-loving and positive as she is determined and relentless, Hurst now calls Oceanside, CA home but spends most of her time on the go, filming surf adventures around the globe.

Surfer. Shaper. Legend. Patriarch. Artist. Enthusiast. Innovator. Friend of Nixon. There isn’t a word, sentence or phrase that can describe Herbie Fletcher. The name evokes a different meaning to different people and they are all correct.

Regarded by many as one of the most innovative surfers of all time, Herbie was a pioneer when it came to what could be surfed on the North Shore of Oahu at time when that area was virtually unexplored.

Fully embracing a lifestyle in the ocean, Herbie injects surfing into every aspect of his life, be it his passion for painting, photography, sculpture or his family. Herbie leads a life designed through the artistic expression of the surfing and we are admirers with what he has in the past and eager about where he’ll go in the future. Here’s to the Fletcher’s our favorite, surfing family.

Opus Bank reached out to The Agency to Ideate, Create and Produce content that would capitalize on their partnership with the Pac 12 and serve as a springboard for a complete rebrand of their bank. The Agency concepted a national television commercial featuring Opus brand ambassador Isaiah Thomas, drawing a parallel to him and Opus Bank highlighting the benefits of being the smaller, faster, more nimble guy in a world of giants.

Oozing with color and a one-of-a-kind look, the Marbleized Supertide needed a campaign that displayed it's unique materialization. Several gallons of paint later, we end up with something worth tuning into and tripping out to.

Makers, innovators, and doers. It’s from engaging with people who personify these traits that inspire Nixon to bring to life thoughtfully designed watches for the everyday. Continuing down the path of adding a narrative layer to the backstory of what motivates our process from idea to the end result, we introduce Malia James and the Bullet. 

Photographer, director, and bass player, California-based Malia James looks at the world and those around her in a unique and thoughtful way. Ever since she was a little girl, Malia knew she wanted to be a director, and through dedication and her passion for creativity her dream of being behind the lens became a reality. Her directorial work for Halsey Ghost to Nalia Prass to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club showcases her range of skills and talent behind the camera.

Not one to limit herself to just one medium, Malia also explores the world through black/white and color still photography. “When I was a little girl, I dreamed of being a director, but I started taking photos when I was really young. The day I shoot...is absolutely...that’s my happy place.” - Malia James

After a brief hiatus, Nixon’s homespun surf contest, The Weird, makes a comeback on Hawaii’s North Shore. A mix of pro and am surfers were invited to compete in the peer-judged contest at Ehukai Beach Park. Dustin Barca, Conner Coffin, Jet Schilling, Nathan Fletcher, Josh Kerr, Betet Merta, Kaiwi Berry, Jojo Roper, Kalani David, Daniel Russo, Mike Dodd, Leila Hurst, Nathan Florence, Kamalei Alexander and Thatcher Johnson competed in the winner takes all, one-day event. Hosted with colorful commentary by Parker Coffin, riders were matched through a blind draw pairing with one of seven weird boards. Shaped by Hawaii local John Pyzel of Pyzel Surfboards, the boards were a variety of different shapes and sizes and included everything from twin fins to asymmetrical boards. The contest consisted of four-man heats judged by fellow peer participants with the top finisher of each heat heading to finals. 

Nathan Fletcher, Josh Kerr, Conner Coffin, and Kalani David squared off in the finals with Josh Kerr claiming the $1000 purse of cold hard cash.

The etnies Buy a Shoe, Plant a Tree project started in 2011 when etnies Owner and CEO, Pierre-Andre Senizergues decided to invest in the future by planting a tree in the Costa Rican rainforest for every pair of Jameson 2 Eco shoes sold. The following year, the program expanded to Brazil and the next phase of planting will take place in Africa. Demonstrating that it’s more than just a seasonal clothing line, The Green Label collection includes finely crafted and styled garments constructed primarily of natural, organic, and sustainable fibers.

In development for more than two years, the Green Label collection consists of men’s streetwear pieces including denim, wovens, knits, shorts, pants, sweaters, and tees. The foundation for the line includes hemp, organic cotton, ramie cotton blends, recycled plastic bottles, linen, and wool. Green Label collection styling shares typical Planet Earth aesthetics that reflect the tone and trends of progressive urban culture with the colors and texture of nature.

The legacy of the Planet Earth brand includes rider and environmentally inspired pieces that offer a fresh perspective on the cross-pollination of urban and natural environments. This Green Label collection hints towards the future of the brand and is a natural fit for Planet Earth team riders, offering products that appeal across their different cultures and ideologies.

We aired out a lot of ideas leading up to S&C, but it was Mike Manzoori’s dream sequence storyboard filled with a cardboard city that had us sold. It fit what we wanted to do visually—the photos and video would be equally striking, and it was “do-able.” The props were lightweight, mostly recycled, the unknown obstacles could be styled to match our set, the video had a beginning, middle, and end, and it was guaranteed to be unique. The stage was set.

Enter Sean Malto… the perfect person to carry out the lighthearted storyline. The story actually starts at TransWorld’s warehouse when he receives a package and finds himself getting sucked into Boxton Square, a cardboard dream city full of places to skate. It was a labor of love for all of us, and it shows through in the photos and video. We couldn’t have asked for a better video director and crew, photographer, set designers, support staff, or team of skateboarders. Everyone ripped.

TransWorld SKATEboarding's 3rd installment of Skate and Create had Etnies back as defending champs. This time was all about nostalgia and having fun. Guest appearances by Kareem Campbell, Rick Kosick, and many more made this a memorable event that took everyone back to the  90's for a minute.

I brought in Edwin Herrera, a legit graffiti artist from east LA, who created a redefined version of the World Park from back in the day. Everyone lived in their costumes, Benny Maglinao shot to tape on a duct taped camera and Oliver Barton shot beautiful stills on film. The presentation of the story in the magazine and on the web took the flashback to another level with screen grab sequences and side stories reminiscent of Big Brother magazine.
